The evolution of society’s norm throughout man’s existence has been nothing short of astonishing and controversial. A few decades ago, things like taboo were kept away from, but now they are perfectly normal in today’s modern society. When and how did this happen?
When doing a little research online regarding acceptance of inter-racial unions, one thing becomes blatantly obvious: between the two predominant reactions, nonchalance and outright antagonism, the latter is slowly and steadily losing ground as it gives way to more liberal ways of thinking. Make no mistake, racism is still rampant and not only between blacks and whites. These days, racial discrimination can also be found in remote areas of the world. The Chinese would hardly take a second look at the Japanese nor is it often that we see an American or German marrying an African bride. Why is this so?
Skin color is one contributing factor. In 2009, a white U.S. court judge denied a couple their right to get married. The man was black and the woman was white. His argument was that he did not want their offspring to spend his or her life being ridiculed by others because of the mixed blood-line. To the majority, this is an unethical and biased move for a judge. Surprisingly, however, there are quite a number of people who agree with him, but not one of them is a psychologist whose opinion would have had more weight than that of any judge. In the end, the couple got married by another judge. They sued the first judge for what he did to them. Eventually, the judge resigned from office succumbing to the public’s outrage.
When something new or strange is introduced into someone’s normal world, it is instinctively met with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. There is no denying that it takes a conscious effort for, say, an Asian guy to get himself to even introduce himself to an African lady. Following that, there are those huge barriers such as culture, language, religion and so on. Going beyond a couple’s romantic relationship, if the judge’s excuse was to be believed, there are apparently more challenges that remain to be conquered.
All things considered, it may seem exceedingly difficult to maintain an inter-racial relationship. You would be surprised to know that this is far from the truth. In fact, surveys have shown that inter-racial dating and the consequential relationship following that actually last much longer than the average same-race couples. Why is this the case?
Common sense dictates that, in general terms, these two individuals are so diverse from each other that they’re both sensitive to one another’s disposition. They both have at least one thing in common which holds them together and serves as their foundation in building a stronger relationship. The constant adjustments that each has to make for the other actually serves to maintain their interest in each other. This goes on until both eventually end up feeling comfortable in their relationship.
